Interview with Sebastian Llovera

Interview by Natalia Rocafuerte

Sebastian Llovera @llovera.studio is a Venezuelan artist interested in inquiring about the notions of space-time, history and systemic thinking. Allowing to establish multiple relationships and meanings, his proposals usually leave room for indeterminacy and possibilities, behaving in synch with the modus operandi of what we conceived as the universe.

How is your winter going, where are you located?
We don't have winter in Venezuela as it is a tropical country, although, having almost 8 months in quarantine feels like it in some ways… So much time indoors has led me to radically change my thinking and artistic practice.

How did you create this piece?
This piece is a compendium of material that I recorded in family trips as well as sounds of my daily life combined with videos produced using machine learning processes which were run with a variety of data such as mushrooms drawings, archaeological objects and deteriorated photographs.

I wanted to combine these simple techniques (domestic video and audio recordings) with new technologies (machine learning) in order to set questions about the nature of time, space and memory, among other subjects. The video merge into a sequence of images in continuous modification where it's hard to isolate its elements, accompanied by the audio of an evangelist discussing about God that I met once in the Caracas’ subway and some recordings of random conversations by members of my family that are not necessarily meant to be understand directly but to be perceived by the mere quality and richness of its sound.

A work that is absurd and transcendental at the time, simple and complex, personal and impersonal.

What drives your experimental work?
My work is driven by uncertainty; it is a chaotic process where I reach a point of quietness in which I am able to have a glimpse of what I am doing in order to start establishing different semantic relations between its components.

Something that is crucial to me it's that I don’t think of a work as finished… Just

material that I can continue to modify indefinitely, as I don´t believe things have only one meaning, it is important to me that the people interacting with my works could have their own interpretation and questions about it.

Would you care to share your last dream?
I like to think of reality as a dream so… :)
