The piece incorporates field recordings from Bosque Toro Negro in Ciales, Puerto Rico with found sounds controlled by the MIDI Sprout which translates plants' biorhythms into music. Connecting two electrodes to the leaves of a small Zamioculcas new rhythms and melodic gestures are generated by detecting the slight electrical variations in the plant which are then translated to MIDI data and mapped to sounds from my kitchen including coffee beans and metal pots and pans. With this process, I intend to activate and make audible the secret life of plants to evoke distant landscapes connected to personal memories of places and spaces that are far away from me. This latest version takes various field recordings of applause from Black Lives Matter marches, vigils and other events and creates a dense new memory of this important movement in history. Hyper-memory Installations, or HMI for short, refers to Maria's specific composing practice with this project, taking audio memories (or .wav files) and layering them in various audibly dense configurations. The composing act of layering audio snapshots multiple times creates a conceptually jam packed day, hence the use of the word "hyper". By sonically placing multiple tiers of audio documentation, in this case the applause from the Black Lives Matters events, this form of creative field recording practice is aimed to view the sound of applause as a sound source, separating it from the role of applause as a reaction after performance/presentation. As the perception of the listener shifts some may mistake the recordings of applause as sounds from a rainstorm, others may feel the deeper intensity of the applause due to the content the subjects were reacting to. The piece is 8 minutes and 46 seconds, the length of time George Floyd was suffocating for, and is meant to embody the spirit and intensity of the people who came out in support of the Black Lives Matter movement around NYC that Maria was able to attend. While the events she was able to attend were mainly in North Brooklyn (due to her fragile condition as she continues to heal from brain surgery), she hopes this piece helps to make those that were not able to participate feel as if they are standing in the middle of 50 New York Cities with all the Black Lives Matter events happening at once. As a victim of police brutality herself after being unjustly jailed for over 24 hours at the age of 20 in Houston, the murder of George Floyd along with the murder of Sandra Bland (who was unjustly arrested in the same area as Maria was) and so many others is especially triggering. It reminds her that the only reason why she is alive today is because she is not Black. If she was Black when she was thrown in jail she probably would have met Sandra's fate. A reality of her privilege that she is reminded of every day. 2) Experimental Sound Studio Performance Video Without knowing what will be emitted, Maria Chavez takes on the challenge of reinterpreting the entire Northern Spy catalogue by blindly performing/ destroying their records & cassettes. The result is a mix of the unknown, using Maria's abstract turntablism techniques to pull each recording apart. Through the meditative process of ironing his clothes (a duty often identified as “women’s work”), we experience Joe in that familiar goal of finding the perfect crease. Of all domestic chores, ironing is the only one a “homeboy” is more than happy to master, as masterful ironing is the key to reaching an appearance of perfection. And to a homeboy, perfect creases work hand in hand with the power of attraction.Through voiceover, we hear Joe reading his poem, “El Abuelo,” and learn of the potency of ironing that’s used to capture the attention of his “first vato” – his first love of another man." Dinco’s first feature length documentary film, Homeboy, explores gay Latino men who were in gangs. His award-winning short film, El Abuelo, with San Antonio poet Joe Jiménez, premiered at the Tate Modern, has screened internationally, and is included in the online LGBTQ film platform, Frameline Voices. Dinco co-founded You Wear it Well (2006-2008), the first traveling international film festival dedicated to short films on fashion. "My vision for this film was to be as relevant as I could while still being able to capture the creativity of how my story is told. With recent events hitting the Mexican/Latino community hard in the LA protests to the No kings protest here in the valley. I wanted to make a film about the journey and the spiritual aspects of what our community is facing. We show our protagonist on a journey, where is she going, where is she etc. My intention is to leave that narrative open to the viewers. I also wanted to use as much symbolism as I could to help shape the story. Including filming at one of our crews old family cemeteries. Using La Lomita as a visual sense of hope and guidance which is also a huge hotspot for people crossing over from Mexico.
